Unbounded Type Specimen
Advanced Typography with Henk Van Assen
Fall 2022
Process
In this project, I want to explore a font that embraces macrons and their phonetic value, especially with the Māori language I grew up listening to. I chose unbounded for its beautiful 'a' and chevron detailing that reminds me of Māori line work.
The front side (left) will be a poster that takes the onomatopoeia bird names that the Māori use and compares them to their British counterparts. There is something soul-less about naming a bird after an explorer versus hearing it and letting it name itself.
Over the next couple of weeks I hope to find a better composition and contrast between the two names and for the more technical side, lean even further into highlighting the unique line work of the font I chose.
I decided to take another approach to my more visual side and created a connection between the Maaori bird names and the British names. I animated the Maaori names to embrace the practice of letting animals, nature, objects, claim their own name, respecting their consciousness.
For the next week, I would like to explore using the negative space on both sides, and find ways to fill them up either by expanding elements or filling it in with smaller, newer ones.
Over the last weeks, I have been able to completely embrace the font, unbounded. Playing with different kerning, thicknesses, and paragraph justifications, all helped me understand and create a cohesive type specimen sheet that embraces the beauty of this font. In this final iteration, I added a fourth color, mustard yellow, to bring to highlight the font name and its personality.
I would like to revisit this poster, simplify the more informative side, and explore my paragraph shapes and formatting more. Since this was my first time using many of these options, I embrace the playfulness of this poster and look forward to learning more.
